Mike Klein is committed to New York. A native New Yorker, his career spans nearly 30 years in the public, private and non-profit sectors, in all of which he distinguished himself as a strategic leader with a keen sense of identifying and mitigating risks.
Dedicated to serving the public
As a foundation for his career in the private sector, Mike worked in a variety of trusted staff positions for a prestigious list of New York elected officials, including Congressman Charles Rangel, City Councilman Stan Michels, Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi, and Governor Mario Cuomo, both in his Administration as Governor and as a personal aide for a decade after he left office.
Mike also served as Deputy County Executive in Nassau County, Deputy Director of the NY/NJ Office of Drug Control Policy under President Clinton’s Drug Czar, and as a Chief in the City of New York Parks & Recreation Department.
From his career of dedicated service, Mike was named to the “Power 100 New York City” list by City & State Magazine in both 2015 and 2016. He was also named to the “Responsible 100” list in 2015, in recognition of his work in the community and on the Boards he serves.
Civic-minded, no matter the sector
Outside of government, Mike has held leadership positions at the non-profit New Yorkers for Parks and The Parks Council, where he designed and managed the Parks 2001 Campaign for Parks in NYC, a coalition of more than 1000 groups in support of parks, recreation and open space.
For the last fifteen years, Mike has worked on local, state, and national issues for clients as a Principal at Dentons LLP, a global law firm with offices in 60 Countries. He provided public policy and government affairs counsel to leaders in the fields of aviation, community development, energy, environmental, infrastructure, engineering, transportation, technology/social media, telecommunications, sports and education.
Mike has also served in key leadership roles on a variety of executive level Boards and community improvement efforts including: the Urban Dove, New York Midnight Basketball, the NYC Chapter of League of Conservation Voters, Wellness in the Schools, Friends of Governor’s Island and the Hunter College Library Foundation.
Mike is a graduate of Hunter College and the New York City Leadership Institute. A proud, lifelong New Yorker, he resides on Manhattan’s Upper West Side with his wife and three children.

Mike Klein founded Urban Strategies with the vision of a new kind of boutique public affairs firm that helps civic-minded clients from the private sector achieve success in the public arena. For over 18 years, Urban Strategies provides strategic planning, advocacy counsel, and government affairs consulting to major companies, non-profit organizations, and cause-related efforts. Urban also advises start-ups at the forefront of innovation on a wide range of strategy, including guidance through the urban landscape, market entry, and the regulatory environment.
